[1190] "Did you not hear the sound of those that came to drink at the lake —
the roar of the lion and the cry of the tiger?
An omen (pubbanimitta) befell me as I wandered in the great forest:
the spade dropped from my hand, and the basket I bore fell from my shoulder.
Then, trembling and afraid, I stretched wide my joined palms in reverence
and paid homage to all the quarters: 'May there yet be safety from this!
May our prince not have been slain by lion or by leopard!
May the children not have been seized by bears, by wolves, or by hyenas!'
A lion, a tiger, and a leopard — three beasts of prey in the forest —
blocked me upon my path; therefore it is at evening that I have come."
