[1245] And when they saw him coming — the father filled with yearning for his son — Vessantara and Maddī went out to meet him and paid him homage. And Maddī bowed with her head at the feet of her father-in-law: [Page-foot variant apparatus: ๑ M: "sobbhaṃ"; ๒ M: "amittahatthattaṃ gatā"; ๓ Sī, Yu: "parikhitto" — readings keyed to words on the preceding page, not to this verse.] "Sire (deva), it is I, Maddī, your daughter-in-law: I pay homage at your feet." Embracing them there, [the king] stroked them with his hand.
