[240] I contemplate the long future, O bird;
standing firm in the ten qualities (dhammā), I do not tremble at the world beyond (paraloka).
Giving (dāna), virtue (sīla), self-sacrifice (pariccāga), honesty (ājjava), gentleness (maddava), austerity (tapa),
non-anger (akkodha), non-harming (avihiṃsā), patience (khanti), and non-opposition (avirodhana) —
these wholesome (kusala) qualities I see thus established in myself,
and thence are born in me rapture (pīti) and joy (somanassa) in no small measure.
But Sumukha, without reflecting, let fly harsh speech —
this bird, without having ascertained the fault of our disposition (bhāvadosa).
Angered, he gave vent to harsh words without due reflection (ayoniso),
[alleging faults] that are not found in us: this is not like [the way] of the wise.
