[321] The fish Ānanda, greedy for the taste of all fishes, devoured them,
and when his company was utterly exhausted,
he died devouring his very self.
Thus heedless, delighting in devotion to taste,
the fool — if you do not come to understand hereafter —
having wrought ruin, abandons sons and kinsmen,
and, turning round, devours none other than himself.
Having heard this, let your desire (chanda) depart:
O king, do not feed upon human flesh;
do not, O lord of men, like that water-born one,
make this entire realm empty.
