[377] Whoever indeed, thinking, "This is dear to me," keeps guard over things dear,
and, casting himself aside, indulges in things dear —
like a drunkard who has drunk a bowl mixed with poison —
for that very reason he comes to suffering (dukkha) in the world hereafter.
But whoever here, having considered, abandons things dear,
and pursues the noble dhammas (ariyadhamma), even with hardship —
like a man afflicted who has drunk his medicines —
for that very reason he comes to happiness in the world hereafter.
