[391] The flesh of four-footed beasts and of birds besides,
cooked by skilled cooks, well prepared and perfectly finished,
you enjoyed as Inda enjoys ambrosia (sudhā) —
having abandoned all this, how can you delight alone in the forest?
Those khattiya ladies with supple, slender waists,
adorned, surrounding you on every side,
gladdened you even as Inda among the devas —
having abandoned all this, how can you delight alone in the forest?
Upon a couch with crimson pillows, with many fleecy coverlets,
beautiful, spread and adorned with every covering,
you lay in comfort in the very middle of that bed —
having abandoned all this, how can you delight alone in the forest?
The music of clapping hands and the kumbhathūna drum in the night,
and music besides performed wholly by women, with no man among them,
abundant sweet singing and sweet playing —
having abandoned all this, how can you delight alone in the forest?
The city, its gardens rich in abundant blossoms,
endowed with the Migājina park, so delightful,
furnished with horses, elephants, and chariots —
having abandoned all this, how can you delight alone in the forest?
