He is no king who conquers one who should not be conquered;
he is no friend who conquers his friend;
she is no wife who does not stand in awe of her husband;
they are no sons who do not support the aged.
That is no assembly where the good (santo) are not present;
they are not the good who do not speak the Dhamma;
having abandoned lust (rāga), hatred, and delusion,
it is those who speak the Dhamma¹ that are truly the good.
The wise man mingled among fools they do not know when he does not speak;
but when he speaks they know him, as he teaches the deathless state (amataṃ padaṃ).
One should speak and illuminate the Dhamma;
one should hold aloft the banner of the seers (isi):
the seers have well-spoken words as their banner,
for the Dhamma indeed is the banner of the seers.

The summary (uddāna) thereof:
Sumukha, and the great and noble goose,
and the next, the excellent one of the divine food,
the one bearing the name of Kuṇāla, lord of birds,
and the one called after Sutasoma, most excellent and supreme.
