[553] Questioned by him, Mātali, the charioteer of the devas, answered;
#1 M.: anigādhakūlā. 2 M.: pītañca; from here onward it is the same. 3 M.: bhusa; from here onward

knowing the result (vipāka) of evil deeds, he declared it to him who knew not:
"Those who, impure in their deeds, give to buyers
pure grain mixed together with chaff (palāsa) —
for them, scorched by the heat and thirsting,
the water, even as they drink, turns to chaff."
