Having kept watch the whole night through,
Cūḷaneyya of great might,
at daybreak, as the dawn was rising,
advanced upon the city of Upakāra.

Mounted upon his noble elephant,
a mighty beast of sixty years,
the king of Pañcāla spoke —
Cūḷaneyya of great might.
Girt in a cuirass set with gems,
an arrow taken in his hand,
he addressed the serving-men
assembled in their many companies —
the elephant-riders, those stationed in the ranks,
the charioteers, the foot-soldiers,
hands trained in archery,
splitters of hairs, gathered together.
