[876] "We would indeed give five hundred to your honor,
if we knew you to be virtuous and open-handed (vadaññū);
but when you, sir, cruel as you are, are dwelling in hell (niraya),
who would press you for the thousand in the world beyond?
Whoever right here is of unrighteous conduct,
of evil behavior, lazy, of cruel deeds,
the wise do not grant a loan to such a one,
for from a man of that sort there is no return.
But when people have come to know a man as capable,
industrious, virtuous, and open-handed,
they invite him with their wealth of their own accord,
[thinking,] 'Having done his work, he will bring it back again.'"
