[977]
Like sāla trees all beaten down, crushed by the wind,
the sons and the wives lay fallen in the dwelling of Vidhura.
A thousand women, his wives, and seven hundred slave-women,
with arms upraised, wailed in the dwelling of Vidhura.
The women of the harem, the princes, the vessas, and the brahmins,
with arms upraised, wailed in the dwelling of Vidhura.
The elephant riders, the royal guards, the charioteers, and the foot soldiers,
with arms upraised, wailed in the dwelling of Vidhura.
The country folk assembled, and the townsfolk assembled too,
with arms upraised, wailed in the dwelling of Vidhura.
A thousand women, his wives, and seven hundred slave-women,
with arms upraised, wailed: "Why will you forsake us?"
The women of the harem, the princes, the vessas, and the brahmins,
with arms upraised, wailed: "Why will you forsake us?"
The elephant riders, the royal guards, the charioteers, and the foot soldiers,
with arms upraised, wailed: "Why will you forsake us?"
The country folk assembled, and the townsfolk assembled too,
with arms upraised, wailed: "Why will you forsake us?"
