[10] **He is afflicted like one pierced by a dart (sallaviddhova ruppati):** just as one pierced by a dart made of iron, or pierced by a dart made of bone, or by a dart made of ivory, or by a dart made of horn, or by a dart made of wood, is afflicted, agitated, buffeted, oppressed, ailing in body and grieved in mind; even so, through the change and alteration of objects of sensuality (vatthukāma) there arise sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. He, pierced by the dart of sensuality (kāmasalla), is afflicted, agitated, buffeted, oppressed, ailing in body and grieved in mind — thus, "he is afflicted like one pierced by a dart." Therefore the Blessed One said:
If, for that person who desires, in whom desire (chanda) has arisen,
those sensual pleasures waste away, he is afflicted like one pierced by a dart.
