[132] **"One of wisdom vast as the earth (bhūripañño) does not go now high, now low"** means: he does not go from teacher to teacher, does not go from one exposition of Dhamma to another exposition of Dhamma, does not go from group to group, does not go from view to view, does not go from mode of practice (paṭipadā) to mode of practice, does not go from path (magga) to path.
**"One of wisdom vast as the earth"**: one of great wisdom, of abundant wisdom, of joyous wisdom, of swift wisdom, of sharp wisdom, of penetrative wisdom. *Bhūri* is a name for the earth. He is endowed with that wisdom equal to the earth, vast and extensive; therefore, "one of wisdom vast as the earth does not go now high, now low." Hence the Blessed One said:
Having undertaken vows on his own,
a person, attached to perception, goes now high, now low;
but the wise one, having understood the Dhamma through the knowledges,
one of wisdom vast as the earth, does not go now high, now low.
