[177] **"They do not construe, they do not give precedence"** — "Construings" (kappā): there are two construings — construing through craving (taṇhākappa) and construing through views (diṭṭhikappa) … this is construing through craving … this is construing through views. What is construing through craving? Whatever, by what is reckoned as craving (taṇhā), is made a boundary, made a border, made a delimitation, made a circumscription, taken possession of, cherished as one's own: "This is mine, that is mine, this much is mine, to this extent it is mine — mine are forms, sounds, odours, tastes, tangible objects; rugs and coverings; female and male slaves; goats and sheep; fowl and swine; elephants, cattle, horses, and mares; field and land; bullion and gold; villages, towns, and royal capitals; realm and country; treasury and granary" — one cherishes as one's own, through the power of craving, even the entire great earth — as far as the one hundred and eight aberrations of craving: this is construing through craving. What is construing through views? Personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi) with its twenty grounds, wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi) with its ten grounds, the view grasping extremes (antaggāhikā diṭṭhi) with its ten grounds; whatever view (diṭṭhi) of such a kind — a resort to views, a thicket of views, a wilderness of views, a contortion of views, a vacillation of views, a fetter of views; grasping, fixed grasping, insistence, misapprehension (parāmāsa); a wrong road, a false path, wrongness; a sphere of sectarian tenets (titthāyatana); a grasp by inversion, a grasp of the perverse, a grasp by distortion (vipallāsa), a wrong grasp; the grasp "it is so" with regard to what is not so — as far as the sixty-two views: this is construing through views. For them, construing through craving has been abandoned, construing through views has been relinquished; because construing through craving has been abandoned, because construing through views has been relinquished, they do not construe either construing through craving or construing through views — they do not engender it, do not generate it, do not produce it, do not bring it forth: thus, "they do not construe." **"They do not give precedence"** — "Givings of precedence" (purekkhārā): there are two givings of precedence — giving precedence through craving and giving precedence through views … this is giving precedence through craving … this is giving precedence through views. For them, giving precedence through craving has been abandoned, giving precedence through views has been relinquished; because giving precedence through craving has been abandoned, because giving precedence through views has been relinquished, they do not go about having placed either craving or views before them; they do not have craving as their banner, craving as their standard, craving as their dominant influence; they do not have views as their banner, views as their standard, views as their dominant influence; they do not go about surrounded either by craving or by views: thus, "they do not construe, they do not give precedence."
