[195] **A devoted one should not incline toward mine-making (na mamattāya nametha māmako)**: "Mine-making" (mamatta): there are two kinds of mine-making — mine-making through craving (taṇhā) and mine-making through views (diṭṭhi) … this is mine-making through craving … this is mine-making through views. "A devoted one" (māmako): one devoted to the Buddha, devoted to the Dhamma, devoted to the Saṅgha; that person cherishes the Blessed One as his own, and the Blessed One accepts that person as His own. For this was said by the Blessed One: "Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus who are deceitful, stubborn, garrulous, ostentatious, haughty, and unconcentrated — those bhikkhus, bhikkhus, are not devoted to me; those bhikkhus have gone away from this Dhamma and Discipline, and they do not attain growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline. But, bhikkhus, those bhikkhus who are not deceitful, not garrulous, wise, not stubborn, and well concentrated — those bhikkhus, bhikkhus, are indeed devoted to me; those bhikkhus have not gone away from this Dhamma and Discipline, and they attain growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline."
The deceitful, the stubborn, the garrulous, the ostentatious,
the haughty, the unconcentrated —
they do not grow in the Dhamma
taught by the Fully Self-Enlightened One.
The undeceitful, the ungarrulous, the wise,
the unstubborn, the well concentrated —
they indeed grow in the Dhamma
taught by the Fully Self-Enlightened One.
**A devoted one should not incline toward mine-making**: a devoted one, having abandoned mine-making through craving and having relinquished mine-making through views, should not incline toward mine-making, should not bend down toward it; he should not be inclined toward it, not leaning toward it, not sloping toward it, not intent upon it, not have it as his dominant influence — thus, "a devoted one should not incline toward mine-making." Therefore the Blessed One said:
Even at death that is abandoned
which a person conceives, "This is mine";
understanding this too, the wise one, being devoted,
should not incline toward mine-making.
