[21] **"The powerless ones overpower him" (abalā naṃ balīyanti):** "Powerless" means: the defilements (kilesa) are powerless, weak, of little power, of little strength, inferior, low, fallen away, deficient, vile, paltry (jatukka), limited. Those defilements overcome that person, thoroughly overcome him, overpower him, overwhelm him, consume him, and crush him — thus too, "the powerless ones overpower him." Or alternatively: a powerless person — weak, of little power, of little strength, inferior, low, fallen away, deficient, vile, paltry, limited — in whom there is no power of faith (saddhābala), no power of energy (vīriyabala), no power of mindfulness (satibala), no power of concentration (samādhibala), no power of wisdom (paññābala), no power of moral shame (hirībala), no power of moral dread (ottappabala): those defilements overcome that person, thoroughly overcome him, overpower him, overwhelm him, consume him, and crush him — thus too, "the powerless ones overpower him."
