[211] **"They call it concord for him, that he should not show himself in an abode (of existence)"**: Concord (sāmaggī): there are three kinds of concord — concord of the group (gaṇasāmaggī), concord of dhammas (dhammasāmaggī), and concord of non-re-arising (anabhinibbattisāmaggī).
What is concord of the group? Even when many bhikkhus dwell in concord, mutually rejoicing, without disputing, blending like milk and water, regarding one another with affectionate eyes — this is concord of the group.
What is concord of dhammas? The four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna), the four right strivings (sammappadhāna), the four bases of spiritual power (iddhipāda), the five faculties (indriya), the five powers (bala), the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), and the noble eightfold path — these launch forth together, become clarified, become well established, and are released as one; there is no dispute or contention among those dhammas — this is concord of dhammas.
What is concord of non-re-arising? Even when many bhikkhus attain final Nibbāna in the Nibbāna-element without residue remaining, no diminution or filling up of the Nibbāna-element is discerned — this is concord of non-re-arising.
**"In an abode"**: hell (niraya) is the abode of the beings in hell; the animal realm (tiracchānayoni) is the abode of those born in the animal realm; the realm of hungry ghosts (pittivisaya) is the abode of those in the realm of ghosts; the human world is the abode of human beings; the world of devas is the abode of the devas. **"They call it concord for him, that he should not show himself in an abode"**: that is concord for him; this is fitting, this is proper, this is becoming, this is in conformity — namely, that one who has practiced thus should not show himself in hell, should not show himself in the animal realm, should not show himself in the realm of hungry ghosts, should not show himself in the human world, should not show himself in the world of devas: so they say, so they have said, so they speak, so they utter, so they explain, so they express. Therefore: "They call it concord for him, that he should not show himself in an abode." Hence the Blessed One said:
For a bhikkhu who lives withdrawn,
resorting to a secluded seat,
they call it concord for him
that he should not show himself in an abode of existence.
