[232] **"And the teaching is forgotten (mussate vāpi sāsanaṃ)"**: the teaching (sāsana) is forgotten for two reasons: the teaching as scripture (pariyatti-sāsana) is forgotten, and the teaching as practice (paṭipatti-sāsana) is forgotten.
What is the teaching as scripture? Whatever has been learned by him — sutta, geyya, veyyākaraṇa, gāthā, udāna, itivuttaka, jātaka, abbhūtadhamma, vedalla — this is the teaching as scripture. That too is forgotten, utterly forgotten; one becomes an outsider to it. Thus, too, "and the teaching is forgotten."
What is the teaching as practice? Right practice, practice in conformity, practice that is not contrary, practice in accordance with the goal, practice of the Dhamma in accordance with the Dhamma; the fulfillment of virtues, the guarding of the doors of the sense faculties, moderation in eating, devotion to wakefulness, mindfulness and clear comprehension (sati-sampajañña), the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna), the four right strivings, the four bases of spiritual power, the five spiritual faculties, the five powers, the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), the noble eightfold path (magga) — this is the teaching as practice. That too is forgotten, utterly forgotten; one becomes an outsider to it. Thus, too, "and the teaching is forgotten."
