[24] **Like water into a broken ship** means: just as water pursues a broken ship — water flows in, follows after, and keeps close upon it from here and there; water flows in, follows after, and keeps close upon it from the front; from behind, from below, and from the side water flows in, follows after, and keeps close upon it — even so, from this and that peril (parissaya) suffering (dukkha) pursues that person, follows after him, and keeps close upon him; the suffering of birth pursues him, follows after him, and keeps close upon him … the suffering of the ruin of views pursues him, follows after him, and keeps close upon him. Hence, "like water into a broken ship." Therefore the Blessed One said:
The weak overpower him; perils crush him;
thence suffering pursues him,
like water into a broken ship.
