[28] **Having abandoned these, one should cross the flood (ogha):** "These" means: having fully understood sensual pleasures as objects (vatthukāma); having abandoned, relinquished, dispelled, made an end of, and brought to non-existence sensual pleasures as defilements (kilesakāma); having abandoned, relinquished, dispelled, made an end of, and brought to non-existence the hindrance (nīvaraṇa) of sensual desire; having abandoned, relinquished, dispelled, made an end of, and brought to non-existence the hindrance of ill will, the hindrance of dullness and drowsiness, the hindrance of restlessness and remorse, and the hindrance of doubt — one should cross, cross up over, cross beyond, transcend, and pass over the flood of sensuality, the flood of existence, the flood of views, and the flood of ignorance. Hence, "Having abandoned these, one should cross the flood."
