[289] **"These disputes have arisen among ascetics (samaṇā)":** "Ascetics" means any whosoever who, outside of this [Dispensation], have taken up the wanderer's (paribbājaka) life, have entered upon the state of wanderers. These quarrels over views (diṭṭhi), contentions over views, strife over views, disputes over views, and animosities over views have arisen, come into being, been produced, been brought forth, and appeared among ascetics. Hence, "these disputes have arisen among ascetics."
