[299] **"Whatever haughtiness there is, that is his ground of distress"**: whatever haughtiness (uṇṇati), self-exaltation (uṇṇama), flaunting like a banner (dhaja), holding oneself aloft (sampaggāha), vainglory of the mind (citta) (ketukamyatā cittassa) — that is for him a ground of distress (vighātabhūmi), a ground of ruin (ugghātabhūmi), a ground of oppression (pīḷanabhūmi), a ground of affliction (ghaṭṭanabhūmi), a ground of calamity (upaddavabhūmi), a ground of misfortune (upasaggabhūmi). Hence: "whatever haughtiness there is, that is his ground of distress."
