[307] **"Already before, there is nothing here — that is, for battle" (pubbeva natthī yadidaṃ yudhāya):** Already before — at the foot of the Bodhi tree — whatever defilements (kilesa) there are that make opposition, that make contrariety, that make thorns, that make antagonism: those do not exist, they are not, they are not found, they are not to be obtained; they have been abandoned, cut off, stilled, tranquilized, rendered incapable of arising again, burnt up by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa).
**"That is, for battle" (yadidaṃ yudhāya):** that is, for the purpose of battle, for the purpose of quarreling, for the purpose of strife, for the purpose of contention, for the purpose of dispute, for the purpose of discord. Hence, "already before, there is nothing here — that is, for battle."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
As a champion, nourished on the king's fare,
comes roaring, longing for a rival champion —
run off, champion, to wherever that one is;
already before, there is nothing here for battle.
