[31] **A being is attached in the cave, covered over by much** — the word "attached" (satto) has indeed been stated. But first the cave should be spoken of. The body is called the cave. "Body," or "cave," or "frame" (deha), or "conglomeration" (sandeha), or "boat," or "chariot," or "banner," or "anthill," or "nest," or "city," or "hut," or "boil," or "pot" — these are designations for the body. **Attached in the cave**: in the cave one is attached, stuck fast, clung on, caught, fastened, impeded. Just as goods hung upon a wall-peg or an elephant-tusk peg (nāgadanta) are attached, stuck fast, clung on, caught, fastened, impeded, even so in the cave one is attached, stuck fast, clung on, caught, fastened, impeded. For this was said by the Blessed One: "Whatever desire, whatever lust, whatever delight, whatever craving (taṇhā) there is regarding form (rūpa), whatever engagements and clingings, whatever mental standpoints, adherences, and latent tendencies — one is attached (satto) therein; therefore one is called a 'being' (satto)." "Being" (satto) is a designation for one who is stuck fast; hence, "attached in the cave." **Covered over by much**: covered by many defilements (kilesa) — covered by lust (rāga), covered by hatred, covered by delusion, covered by anger, covered by grudging, covered by denigration, covered by domineering, covered by envy, covered by avarice, covered by deceit, covered by hypocrisy, covered by obstinacy, covered by contentiousness, covered by conceit (māna), covered by excessive conceit, covered by intoxication, covered by heedlessness; covered by all defilements, by all misconduct, by all distress, by all fevers, by all torments, by all unwholesome volitional formations — covered over, veiled over, shrouded, enveloped, obstructed, closed off, concealed, turned over upon as by an upturned vessel. Hence, "a being is attached in the cave, covered over by much."
