[34] **"For sensual pleasures in the world are indeed not easily abandoned"** — "Sensual pleasures (kāmā)": by way of summary, sensual pleasures are twofold: objective sensuality (vatthukāma) and subjective sensuality (kilesakāma). What is objective sensuality? Agreeable forms, agreeable sounds, agreeable odours, agreeable tastes, agreeable tangibles; spreads and coverings; female and male slaves; goats and sheep; fowl and swine; elephants, cattle, horses, and mares; fields and land; coined and uncoined gold; villages, towns, and royal capitals; realm and country; treasury and storehouse; and any object whatsoever that arouses lust — these are objective sensuality. Moreover: past sensual pleasures, future sensual pleasures, present sensual pleasures; internal sensual pleasures, external sensual pleasures, sensual pleasures both internal and external; inferior sensual pleasures, middling sensual pleasures, superior sensual pleasures; sensual pleasures belonging to beings in the states of loss, human sensual pleasures, celestial sensual pleasures; sensual pleasures presently arrayed, sensual pleasures self-created, sensual pleasures created by others; sensual pleasures possessed, sensual pleasures unpossessed; sensual pleasures cherished as one's own, sensual pleasures not cherished as one's own; indeed all dhammas of the sense sphere, all dhammas of the form sphere, all dhammas of the formless sphere, which are the basis of craving (taṇhā) and the object of craving, are sensual pleasures in the sense of being desirable, in the sense of arousing lust, in the sense of intoxicating. These are called objective sensuality. What is subjective sensuality? Desire is sensuality; lust is sensuality; desire-and-lust is sensuality; intention is sensuality; lust is sensuality; intention-and-lust is sensuality. That which, regarding sensual pleasures, is sensual desire (kāmacchanda), sensual lust, sensual delight, sensual craving, sensual affection, sensual fever, sensual infatuation, sensual cleaving; the flood of sensuality, the yoke of sensuality, clinging to sensuality, the hindrance (nīvaraṇa) of sensual desire — I have seen your root, O sensuality: from intention, O sensuality, you are born. I shall not form intention of you; thus, O sensuality, you shall not be. These are called subjective sensuality. **"In the world"**: in the world of the states of loss, the world of humans, the world of devas, the world of the aggregates (khandha), the world of the elements (dhātu), the world of the sense bases (āyatana). **"For sensual pleasures in the world are indeed not easily abandoned"**: for sensual pleasures in the world are hard to abandon, hard to give up, hard to relinquish, hard to subdue, hard to disentangle, hard to cross, hard to cross over, hard to surmount, hard to pass beyond; therefore, "for sensual pleasures in the world are indeed not easily abandoned." Hence the Blessed One said: Attached in the cave, covered over by much, a man, while standing, is sunk in delusion; one such as that is far indeed from seclusion, for sensual pleasures in the world are indeed not easily abandoned.
