[364] **"As a lotus sprung from ela and ambu, a thorn-stalked plant born of vāri, is not soiled by water and mud"** (elambujaṃ kaṇṭakavārijaṃ yathā jalena paṅkena ca nūpalittaṃ): *Ela* is a term for water. *Ambu* is a term for water. *Ambuja* is a term for the lotus. *Kaṇṭaka* is a term for the rough stalk. *Vāri* is a term for water. *Vārija* is a term for the lotus — water-born, arisen from water. *Jala* is a term for water. *Paṅka* is a term for mud. Just as the lotus — water-born, arisen from water — is not stained, not besmeared, not soiled by water and by mud, being unstained, unbesmeared, unsoiled: therefore it is said, "as a lotus sprung from ela and ambu, a thorn-stalked plant born of vāri, is not soiled by water and mud."
