[39] **"They yearn for these very sensual pleasures or for those of the past"** — "these very sensual pleasures (kāma)": desiring, delighting in, wishing for, longing for, and yearning after the five strands of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa) that are present. "They yearn for those of the past": yearning for, yearning over, and yearning after the five strands of sensual pleasure that are past. Hence, "yearning for these very sensual pleasures or for those of the past." Therefore the Blessed One said:
With desire as their cause, bound to the delight of existence,
they are hard to set free — indeed, there is no release through another;
looking to what comes after or to what came before,
they yearn for these very sensual pleasures or for those of the past.
