[391] **"One without clinging regarding the future" (nirāsattī anāgate):** Clinging (āsatti) is a term for craving (taṇhā) — whatever lust, passion, … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. For whomever this clinging, this craving, has been abandoned, cut off, stilled, calmed, rendered incapable of arising again, burned up by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa) — thus too is one without clinging regarding the future.
Or else, [thinking,] "May I be of such form in the future period," one does not bring along delight therein; [thinking,] "May I have such feeling (vedanā), may I have such perception, may I have such volitional formations, may I have such consciousness in the future period," one does not bring along delight therein — thus too is one without clinging regarding the future.
Or else, [thinking,] "Thus may my eye be in the future period, thus may forms be," one does not set the mind (citta) on the obtaining of what has not been obtained; owing to the non-setting of the mind, one does not delight in that; not delighting in that — thus too is one without clinging regarding the future. [Thinking,] "Thus may my ear be in the future period, thus may sounds be" … [thinking,] "Thus may my mind be in the future period, thus may dhammas be," one does not set the mind on the obtaining of what has not been obtained; owing to the non-setting of the mind, one does not delight in that; not delighting in that — thus too is one without clinging regarding the future.
Or else, [thinking,] "By this virtue, or by this observance, or by this austerity, or by this holy life (brahmacariya), I shall become a deva or a certain one among the devas," one does not set the mind on the obtaining of what has not been obtained; owing to the non-setting of the mind, one does not delight in that; not delighting in that — thus too is one without clinging regarding the future.
