[396] **"Withdrawn, not deceitful" (paṭilīno akuhako):** "Withdrawn" (paṭilīno) — through the abandonment of lust (rāga) he is withdrawn; through the abandonment of hatred he is withdrawn; through the abandonment of delusion he is withdrawn; through the abandonment of anger (kodha), of grudge (upanāha), of detraction (makkha), of domineering (paḷāsa), of envy (issā), of avarice (macchariya) … through the abandonment of all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhārā) he is withdrawn. For this was said by the Blessed One: "And how, Bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu withdrawn? Here, Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu's conceit 'I am' (asmimāna) has been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, brought to non-existence, of a nature not to arise again in the future. In this way, Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is withdrawn." Hence, "withdrawn."
