[404] **"And not engaged in excessive conceit (atimāna)":** What is excessive conceit? Here someone despises another on account of birth, or on account of clan, … or on account of some ground or other. Whatever conceit (māna) of such a kind there is — conceiving, the state of being conceited, loftiness, haughtiness, (conceit like) a banner, self-exaltation, the mind's (citta) desire for a pennant — this is called excessive conceit. One in whom this excessive conceit has been abandoned, cut off, stilled, tranquilized, rendered incapable of arising again, burnt by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa) — he is not engaged in, not devoted to, not attached to, not bound up with excessive conceit. Hence, "and not engaged in excessive conceit."
