[420] **"In whom there is no craving for existence and for non-existence"** — *Craving (taṇhā)*: craving for forms, craving for sounds, craving for odors, craving for tastes, craving for tangibles, craving for dhammas. *"In whom"*: in the Arahant whose taints (āsava) are destroyed. *"For existence"*: for the view of existence. *"For non-existence"*: for the view of non-existence. *"For existence"*: for eternalism (sassata-diṭṭhi). *"For non-existence"*: for annihilationism (uccheda-diṭṭhi). *"For existence"*: for existence again and again, for destination again and again, for reappearance again and again, for rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi) again and again, for the production of individual existence (attabhāva) again and again. In whom that craving does not exist, is not found, is not obtained — being abandoned, cut off, calmed, tranquilized, rendered incapable of arising, burnt by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa) — thus: "in whom there is no craving for existence and for non-existence." Therefore the Blessed One said:
"In whom there is no dependence, who, having known the Dhamma, is independent,
in whom there is no craving for existence and for non-existence."
