[425] **He has crossed over the clinging (visattikā):** "Visattikā" is a designation for craving (taṇhā); that is, whatever lust (rāga), infatuation (sārāga) … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root.
**Visattikā:** In what sense is it "visattikā"? It is diffused (visatā), thus it is visattikā. It is extensive (visālā), thus it is visattikā. It is dispersed (visaṭā), thus it is visattikā. It is uneven (visamā), thus it is visattikā. It creeps about (visakkati), thus it is visattikā. It draws one astray (visaṃharati), thus it is visattikā. It is deceptive (visaṃvādikā), thus it is visattikā. It has a poisonous root (visamūlā), thus it is visattikā. It has poisonous fruit (visaphalā), thus it is visattikā. Its enjoyment is poisonous (visaparibhogā), thus it is visattikā.
Or else, that craving (taṇhā) is extensive: it is dispersed and stretched wide over forms, sounds, odors, tastes, tangibles, family, company, dwelling … over dhammas seen, heard, sensed, and cognizable, thus it is visattikā.
**He has crossed over the clinging:** he has crossed over, crossed beyond, passed beyond, surmounted, and gone beyond this craving called visattikā; therefore, "he has crossed over the clinging." Hence the Blessed One said:
Him I call "one at peace,"
who looks not with longing upon sensual pleasures;
no ties (ganthā) are found in him:
he has crossed over the clinging.
