[59] **Not forming attachment in existences (bhavesu āsattim akubbamāno):** "In existences" means in sense-sphere existence (kāmabhava), in form-sphere existence (rūpabhava), in formless-sphere existence (arūpabhava). "Attachment" (āsatti) is a designation for craving (taṇhā): that which is lust, infatuation, … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. "Not forming attachment in existences" means not forming attachment in existences — not forming desire, affection, lust, or fondness; not generating it, not engendering it, not producing it, not bringing it forth. Thus, "not forming attachment in existences." Therefore the Blessed One said:
See them floundering over what is cherished as "mine,"
like fish in a dwindling stream with little water;
having seen even this, one should live without "mine"-making,
not forming attachment in existences.
