[659] **"For purity for them is only individual (paccattaṃ)"** means: the purity (suddhi), higher purity (visuddhi), complete purity (parisuddhi), release (mutti), deliverance (vimutti), and complete deliverance (parimutti) of those ascetics and brahmins is only individual — hence, "for purity for them is only individual." Therefore the Blessed One said:
And their honoring of their own doctrine is just as true,
Just as they praise their own ways (sakāyanāni);
[If that were so,] all assertions would likewise be true,
For purity for them is only individual.
