[696] *He, having become one whose army is demolished amid all dhammas—whatever is seen, heard, or sensed*: "Army" means the army of Māra. Bodily misconduct is Māra's army; verbal misconduct is Māra's army; mental misconduct is Māra's army; lust, hatred, delusion, anger, grudging, denigration, domineering, envy, avarice, deceit, hypocrisy, obstinacy, contentiousness, conceit, arrogance, intoxication, heedlessness—all defilements, all misconduct, all distress, all fevers, all torments, all unwholesome volitional formations (sabbākusalābhisaṅkhārā) are Māra's army. For this was said by the Blessed One:
"Sensual pleasures are your first army;
discontent is called your second;
your third is hunger and thirst;
the fourth is called craving (taṇhā);
your fifth is dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha);
the sixth is called cowardice;
your seventh is doubt (vicikicchā);
denigration and obstinacy are your eighth;
gain, praise, honor,
and whatever fame is wrongly obtained,
and whoever exalts himself
and despises others—
this, Namuci, is your army,
the attacking force of the Dark One.
No coward conquers it,
but having conquered it, one gains happiness."
When, by the four noble paths, all of Māra's army and all the defilements that make opposition have been conquered and defeated, broken, scattered, and turned away, he is called "one whose army is demolished." He is one whose army is demolished with regard to the seen; one whose army is demolished with regard to the heard, the sensed, and the cognized. Therefore: "He, having become one whose army is demolished amid all dhammas—whatever is seen, heard, or sensed."
