[716] **"He should not abide conceiving of himself"** (nātumānaṃ vikappayaṃ tiṭṭhe): *ātumāna* is a term for the self (attā). Conceiving the self, conceiving it in diverse ways, entering upon conception — one should not so abide; hence, "he should not abide conceiving of himself." Therefore the Blessed One said: "One should not on that account conceive oneself better, nor inferior, nor yet equal; questioned in manifold ways,¹ one should not abide conceiving of oneself."² [Variant readings noted in the source: ¹ Ma., Yu. read *phuṭṭho* ("touched") for *puṭṭho* ("questioned"). ² Ma. reads *atimānaṃ*.]
