[723] **Just as in the middle of the ocean no wave arises, but it stands still** — the ocean is eighty-four thousand yojanas deep in its depth. Below, the water for forty thousand yojanas is stirred by fish and turtles; above, the water for forty thousand yojanas is stirred by the winds; in the middle, the water for four thousand yojanas does not stir, does not waver, does not move, does not shake, does not tremble, does not quake; it is unagitated, unbuffeted, unmoved, unruffled, not swirling — it is stilled. There no wave arises; the ocean stands still. Thus, in this way too, "just as in the middle of the ocean no wave arises, but it stands still."
Or else: in the intervals between the seven mountains lies the Sīdantara ocean. There the water does not stir, does not waver, does not move, does not shake, does not tremble, does not quake; it is unagitated, unbuffeted, unmoved, unruffled, not swirling — it is stilled. There no wave arises; the ocean stands still. Thus, in this way too, "just as in the middle of the ocean no wave arises, but it stands still."
