[734] **And he should not be greedy for taste (rase ca nānugijjheyya):** "Taste" (rasa) means: the taste of roots, the taste of stems, the taste of bark, the taste of leaves, the taste of flowers, the taste of fruits; sour, sweet, bitter, pungent, salty, alkaline, acrid, astringent, palatable, unpalatable, cold, hot. There are some ascetics and brahmins who are greedy for tastes; they wander about seeking the choicest of tastes with the tip of the tongue. Having obtained the sour, they seek the not-sour; having obtained the not-sour, they seek the sour … having obtained the cold, they seek the hot; having obtained the hot, they seek the cold. Whatever they obtain, they are not satisfied with that; they seek ever further. In agreeable tastes they are impassioned, greedy, bound, infatuated, engrossed, attached, fastened, and impeded. But he in whom this craving (taṇhā) for tastes has been abandoned, cut off at the root, … burnt up by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa) — he, reflecting wisely, takes food: neither for amusement, nor for intoxication, nor for adornment, nor for beautification, but only so far as suffices for the maintenance and sustenance of this body, for the allaying of affliction, for the assisting of the holy life … "and dwelling in comfort." Just as one would anoint a wound only for the sake of its healing over; or just as one would grease an axle only for the sake of conveying a load; or just as one would eat the flesh of one's own child only for the sake of crossing a wilderness — even so a bhikkhu, reflecting wisely, takes food: neither for amusement … "and there will be blamelessness and dwelling in comfort." He should abandon craving for tastes, dispel it, make an end of it, and bring it to non-existence; he should be withdrawn from craving for tastes, abstaining, thoroughly refraining from it, gone out from it, given it up, released from it, detached from it; he should dwell with a mind rid of boundaries. Hence: "and he should not be greedy for taste."
