[748] **"And a bhikkhu should dwell in seats and beds of little noise"** — *Atha* is a verbal connective (padasandhi) …. Where one sits is called a seat (āsana): a bed, a bench, a mattress, a mat, a piece of hide, a spread of grass, a spread of leaves, a spread of foliage. A lodging (senāsana) is called a bed (sayana): a dwelling, a house with a half-gabled roof, a longhouse, a flat-roofed mansion, a cave — thus, "in seats and beds."
**"A bhikkhu should dwell in [places] of little noise"** means: in lodgings of little noise, of little clamor, unfrequented by people passing to and fro, fit for the private acts of human beings, suitable for seclusion, he should walk, dwell, move about, conduct himself, guard himself, keep himself going, and maintain himself — thus, "and a bhikkhu should dwell in seats and beds of little noise."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
One should be a meditator, not restless of foot;
one should refrain from remorse and should not be negligent;
and a bhikkhu should dwell
in seats and beds of little noise.
