[761] "One should not engage in buying and selling (kayavikkaye na tiṭṭheyya)": those kinds of buying and selling which are prohibited in the Discipline (Vinaya) are not intended in this context. How does one engage in buying and selling? Practicing some deception, or desiring profit, one exchanges a bowl, or a robe, or any other requisite whatsoever together with the five [co-religionists]: thus one engages in buying and selling. How does one not engage in buying and selling? Not practicing deception, nor desiring profit, one exchanges a bowl, or a robe, or any other requisite whatsoever together with the five [co-religionists]: thus one does not engage in buying and selling.
"One should not engage in buying and selling": one should not stand in buying and selling, should not remain fixed therein; one should abandon buying and selling, dispel it, bring it to an end, cause it to come to non-existence; one should be aloof from buying and selling, abstaining, refraining, gone out from it, given it up, released from it, detached from it; one should dwell with a mind (citta) rid of boundaries. Therefore, "one should not engage in buying and selling."
