[763] **And he should not get attached in the village (gāme ca nābhisajjeyya):** How does one get attached in the village? Here a bhikkhu dwells in the village associating closely with householders, rejoicing together with them, sorrowing together with them — happy when they are happy, pained when they are pained — and when tasks and duties arise, he engages himself personally in them: thus too one gets attached in the village. Or else, a bhikkhu, having dressed in the morning, taking bowl and robe, enters a village or a town for alms with body unguarded, with speech unguarded, with mind (citta) unguarded, with mindfulness unestablished, with sense faculties unrestrained; he gets attached here and there, he grasps here and there, he is bound here and there, he comes to calamity and disaster here and there: thus too one gets attached in the village.
How does one not get attached in the village? **And he should not get attached in the village:** he should not get attached in the village, should not grasp, should not be bound, should not be entangled; he should be without greed, not longing, not infatuated, not engrossed, with greed departed, with greed gone, with greed relinquished … he should dwell with a self become like Brahmā. Therefore it is said: "And he should not get attached in the village."
