[790] "People" (janaṃ), in the phrase "See the people in contention": khattiyas (khattiyā), brahmins (brāhmaṇā), vessas, suddas, householders (gahaṭṭhā) and those gone forth (pabbajitā), devas and humans. "In contention" (medhagaṃ): see, behold, look upon, contemplate, and examine the people in contention, the people in quarrel (kalahaṃ janaṃ), the people who are hostile (viruddhaṃ janaṃ), the people who are hostile in return (paṭiviruddhaṃ janaṃ), the people who are angered (āhatajanaṃ), the people who are angered in return (paccāhatajanaṃ), the people who bear malice (āghātitajanaṃ), the people who bear malice in return (paccāghātitajanaṃ) — hence, "See the people in contention."
