[804] **Only at the end, and in conflict** (osānetveva byāruddhe): **Only at the end** — aging (jarā) brings all youth to an end; illness (byādhi) brings all health to an end; death (maraṇa) brings all life to an end; loss brings all gain to an end; obscurity brings all fame to an end; blame brings all praise to an end; suffering (dukkha) brings all pleasure to an end. Hence, "only at the end."
**In conflict** (byāruddhe) — beings who desire youth are thwarted by aging; beings who desire health are thwarted by illness; beings who desire life are thwarted by death; beings who desire gain are thwarted by loss; beings who desire fame are thwarted by obscurity; beings who desire praise are thwarted by blame; beings who desire pleasure are opposed by suffering — thwarted, struck, struck in return, smitten, smitten in return. Hence, "only at the end, and in conflict."
