[809] **Pierced by which dart, one runs about in all directions** — "Dart (salla)": there are seven darts: the dart of lust (rāga), the dart of hatred (dosa), the dart of delusion (moha), the dart of conceit (māna), the dart of views (diṭṭhi), the dart of sorrow (soka), and the dart of perplexity (kathaṃkathā).
What is the dart of lust? Whatever lust, passion, compliance, complaisance, delight, delight-and-lust, passion of the mind (citta) … covetousness, greed — the unwholesome root: this is the dart of lust.
What is the dart of hatred? Resentment arises, thinking, "He has done me harm"; resentment arises, thinking, "He is doing me harm"; resentment arises, thinking, "He will do me harm" … ferocity, churlishness of speech, displeasure of the mind: this is the dart of hatred.
What is the dart of delusion? Not knowing about suffering (dukkha) … not knowing about the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering; not knowing about the past, not knowing about the future, not knowing about the past and the future; not knowing about dhammas dependently arisen through specific conditionality (idappaccayatā); whatever such lack of vision, lack of full understanding, non-awakening, non-enlightenment, non-penetration, failure to grasp, failure to fathom, failure to consider, failure to reflect, failure to realize directly; dullness, foolishness, delusion, confusion, bewilderment; ignorance (avijjā), the flood of ignorance, the yoke of ignorance, the latent tendency of ignorance, the obsession of ignorance, the barrier-bolt of ignorance; delusion — the unwholesome root: this is the dart of delusion.
What is the dart of conceit? Conceit thus: "I am better"; conceit thus: "I am equal"; conceit thus: "I am inferior"; whatever such conceit, conceiving, state of being conceited, haughtiness, loftiness, (the mind as) a banner, self-exaltation, the mind's desire for a banner: this is the dart of conceit.
What is the dart of views? Personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi) with its twenty grounds, wrong view with its ten grounds, extremist view with its ten grounds; whatever such view, resorting to views, the thicket of views, the wilderness of views, the contortion of views, the vacillation of views, the fetter of views; grasping, holding, insistence, misapprehension; the wrong road, the wrong path, wrongness, the ground of sectarian tenets; the grasp of perversion, the inverted grasp, the distorted grasp, the wrong grasp; the grasp of what is unreal as real — as far as the sixty-two views extend: this is the dart of views.
What is the dart of sorrow? For one touched by loss of relatives, or touched by loss of wealth, or touched by loss through illness, or touched by loss of virtue, or touched by loss of view, or for one who meets with one or another loss, or is touched by one or another painful thing: sorrow, sorrowing, the state of being sorrowful, inner sorrow, inner deep sorrow, inner burning, inner deep burning, the smoldering of the mind, grief: this is the dart of sorrow.
What is the dart of perplexity? Doubt about suffering, doubt about the origin of suffering, doubt about the cessation of suffering, doubt about the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering; doubt about the past, doubt about the future, doubt about the past and the future; doubt about dhammas dependently arisen through specific conditionality; whatever such doubt, doubting, the state of doubtfulness, uncertainty, doubt (vicikicchā), vacillation, standing at a crossroads, indecision, failure to grasp conclusively, hesitation, wavering, failure to fathom, consternation of the mind, mental scratching: this is the dart of perplexity.
