[820] **Free from anger, the sage (muni) should cross over evil greed and avarice (vevicchaṃ):** Indeed, "free from anger (akkodhano)" has been said. Moreover, anger (kodha) should first be spoken of. Anger arises in ten ways … In whomever this anger has been abandoned, cut off, calmed, stilled, rendered incapable of arising, burnt up by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa), he is called "free from anger." Because anger has been abandoned, he is free from anger; because the basis of anger has been fully understood, he is free from anger; because the cause of anger has been cut off, he is free from anger. **Greed (lobha):** that which is greed, being greedy, the state of being greedy … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. **Avarice:** the five kinds of stinginess (macchariya) are called avarice — stinginess regarding dwellings … grasping is called stinginess. **The sage (muni):** knowledge (ñāṇa) is called sagacity (mona); that is, wisdom, the act of understanding … having passed beyond attachment and the net, he is a sage. **Free from anger, the sage should cross over evil greed and avarice:** the sage crossed, crossed up, crossed beyond, passed beyond, transcended, and surpassed evil greed and avarice; therefore [it is said], "Free from anger, the sage should cross over evil greed and avarice." Hence the Blessed One said:
One should be truthful, not impudent, without deceit, rid of slander;
free from anger, the sage should cross over evil greed and avarice.
