[822] **Sleep**, in the phrase "one should vanquish sleep, lethargy, and sloth (niddaṃ tandiṃ sahe thīnaṃ)": sleep (niddā) is the unfitness of the body, the unwieldiness of the body, its being shrouded over, its being enveloped, its being blockaded within; torpor (middha), sleepiness, drowsy nodding, dreaming-sleep, the state of being asleep.
**Lethargy** (tandī): whatever lethargy there is, the act of being lethargic, lethargy of mind; laziness, the act of being lazy, the state of laziness.
**Sloth** (thīna): whatever unfitness of the mind (citta) there is, unwieldiness of the mind, its slumping, its shrinking; sluggishness, sagging, the state of having sagged; sloth, the act of being slothful, the state of sloth of the mind.
**One should vanquish sleep, lethargy, and sloth**: one should vanquish, thoroughly vanquish, overcome, overwhelm, exhaust, and crush sleep, lethargy, and sloth; therefore it is said, "one should vanquish sleep, lethargy, and sloth."
