[824] **One should not persist in excessive conceit (atimāna):** Excessive conceit — here someone despises another by birth, or by clan, … or on some ground or other. Whatever conceit there is of such a kind — the conceiving, the state of being conceited, haughtiness, loftiness, (conceit like) a banner, self-exaltation, the mind's desire for a pennant — this is called excessive conceit. **One should not persist in excessive conceit** means: one should not stand upon, should not remain established in, excessive conceit; one should abandon excessive conceit, dispel it, make an end of it, and bring it to non-existence; one should be one who has drawn away from excessive conceit, abstaining from it, refraining from it, gone out from it, relinquished it, released from it, detached from it; one should dwell with a mind (citta) made free of boundaries. Thus, **one should not persist in excessive conceit**.
