[830] **"One should live refraining from rashness (sāhasa)"** — what is rash conduct? The conduct of lust on the part of one who is inflamed is rash conduct; the conduct of hatred on the part of one who is corrupted is rash conduct; the conduct of delusion on the part of one who is deluded is rash conduct; the conduct of conceit (māna) on the part of one who is bound [by it] is rash conduct; the conduct of view on the part of one who misapprehends is rash conduct; the conduct of restlessness on the part of one who has gone to distraction is rash conduct; the conduct of doubt on the part of one who has not reached certainty is rash conduct; the conduct of latent tendencies (anusaya) on the part of one in whom they have grown strong is rash conduct. This is rash conduct.
**"One should live refraining from rashness"** means: one should be aloof from rash conduct, abstaining, refraining, gone out from it, released from it, freed from it, detached from it; one should dwell with a mind (citta) made free from limitations — should live, conduct oneself, move about, behave, proceed, protect oneself, maintain oneself, sustain oneself. Therefore, "one should live refraining from rashness." Hence the Blessed One said:
One should not be led into false speech;
one should not form affection for form (rūpa);
one should fully understand conceit;
one should live refraining from rashness.
