[854] **"With the stream cut, without bonds"** (chinnasoto abandhano): craving (taṇhā) is called "the stream" — that is, whatever lust, infatuation … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. One for whom this stream, craving, has been abandoned, cut off, stilled, calmed, rendered incapable of arising again, burned by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa) — he is called "one with the stream cut."
**"Without bonds"**: there are seven bonds — the bond of lust, the bond of hatred, the bond of delusion, the bond of conceit, the bond of views, the bond of defilements, the bond of misconduct. One for whom these bonds have been abandoned, cut off, stilled, calmed, rendered incapable of arising again, burned by the fire of knowledge — he is called "without bonds." Hence: "with the stream cut, without bonds."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
Whoever has crossed beyond sensual pleasures,
the tie in the world so hard to overcome,
he does not sorrow, he does not covet —
with the stream cut, without bonds.
