[89] **"For whom there are no swellings (ussadā) anywhere in the world":** "For whom" means for the Arahant whose taints (āsava) are destroyed. "Swellings": there are seven swellings — the swelling of lust, the swelling of hatred, the swelling of delusion, the swelling of conceit, the swelling of views, the swelling of defilement, and the swelling of kamma. For whom these swellings are not, do not exist, are not found, and are not apprehended — being abandoned, cut off, stilled, tranquilized, rendered incapable of arising again, burned by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa). "Anywhere": anywhere, in anything, in any place — internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. "In the world": in the world of the states of loss, the world of humans, the world of devas, the world of the aggregates, the world of the elements (dhātu), the world of the sense bases (āyatana). Thus, "for whom there are no swellings anywhere in the world." Therefore the Blessed One said:
A bhikkhu who is peaceful, inwardly quenched,
not boasting about his virtues, "Thus am I" —
that the skilled call the noble state:
for whom there are no swellings anywhere in the world.
